Jigme Singye Wanchuck School of Law Library Presentation - June Chapter Meeting

Join Portland CSI and Holst Architecture for a Presentation on the design and construction of the Jigme Singye Wanchuck School of Law Library.

Holst was engaged to design a law library for the first law school in the Kingdom of Bhutan. Throughout this project, they worked with a diverse team of architects, engineers, and craftspeople to combine traditional Bhutanese artisanship with modern, sustainable design techniques. Taking aesthetic cues from the surrounding physical and cultural context, the library incorporates local materials and construction approaches.

Working in a remote location with limited access to pre-manufactured building materials and technologies required an emphasis on setting achievable sustainability goals. Focusing on improvements to energy efficiency, user comfort, and indoor air quality, we aimed to add as few components as possible to the standard Bhutanese construction to achieve these goals.

The thoughtful combination of traditional aesthetics, materials, and methods with modern global design and approaches to sustainability sets a new precedent for Bhutan, on display for the many future leaders that will pass through the School of Law.
